Trust To A Degree

A World War Two Historical Fiction Novel Based On A True Story

On May 3, 1945, and after being kicked awake by Soviet soldiers early in the morning and put under arrest, Karl Veth it trying to figure out how the Soviets found him and what they want with him. The day before, after hearing the announcement that Berlin had surrendered, Karl and his friend Harold had left their shelter in the subway tunnels where they had spent the last few days leading up to the fall of Berlin. As members of the Hitler Jugend (Hitler Youth), the two 14 year old boys had been ordered to fight to the death, however, they chose to ignore those orders and live.

After being transported to an interrogation center and brought before a Russian political Kommissar, Karl soon finds the answers to his questions. Once again, he is going to be used by a high-ranking official due to his unique knowledge of the Berlin subway system. He must agree to help the Kommissar or risk being shipped off to the Russian labor camps along with the rest of the German prisoners. When Karl learns that Harold has also been arrested and given the same choice, the two boys agree to assist the Kommissar.

In the days that follow, Karl and Harold work with the Kommissar and successfully complete the missions they are assigned. When the last mission is completed, Karl hopes to be released by the Kommissar so he can search for his family. Unfortunately, the final mission ends with a twist and Karl is once again forced to make a life or death decision. This time, however, the life hanging in the balance is not his own, but that of someone very close to him. To save the life of the person he holds dear, Karl must decide whether or not he will follow orders and do the one thing he has never done before - take the life of another.

I am sorry. That is a total BS. As former Soviet citizen I can testify that none of it is true. There were no "Mongolian" women following Soviet troops. Tatars are not Mongols and they do not speak "Burayat". None of them "grunt" instead of speaking. If there is a last name of "Godunov", its owner would have done his best to use less "aristocratic" name to stay alive. And his first name would not have been "Bayan" which is actually a musical instrument.
In addition, wherever the author got an impression that "Mongols" or "Tatars" are tall and muscular? May be they were at the timeof Genghis Khan, but certainly not for couple centuries.
None of it is true. Who is "Pompolit" in this story? It usually was "Zampolit", short of "Secondary in command", responsible for Kommunist Propaganda and detecting and persecuting those who showed a slightest disapproval of any actions of high-ranking officers.
"Called to return home" amost always meant a death sentence. If you are called to return to Russia, it only could mean that you are in a serious trouble and will be interrogated by NKVD/KGB once you arrived. A person, returning "home" won't be free to move around anymore.
On the other hand, if any high-ranked military officer wanted to send home "his" collection of treasures, there will be no one who would dare to question him. There was no need to employ a "subway rat". Even if they did use "subway rat" help for some reason, they would have surely shot him as soon as they did not need him anymore.
Tons of treasures were shipped to Soviet Union from Germany under the label "evidence of a war crime". Sure, many Soviet Generals end up possessing these treasures, but again - no one would ever question them. All their subordinates were replaced often in order to prevent them from conspiring with each other.
No "Mongol" or "Tatar" in 1945 would have had the first name "Alex". Actually, "Mongolians" lived in a separate country "Mongolia" close to Russian/Chinese border.

As about the atrocities descibed in this book, they are way too mild.

Trust To A Degree Book 3 eBook Horst Christian Reviews

I normally don't buy the 2nd in any series since they started this teaser way of selling ebooks. Get you interested and rather than it being all one novel they break it up into smaller books and sell the rest of the story to you. I suppose its good business but it really irritates me. So imagine my surprise when I actually purchase the other two or three in this series. I was so invested in the characters I just had to know. The books are short because this really should have been just one decent size novel, but you kidnapped my imagination and I had no choice but to pay the ransom.
Based on a true story, with names changed, the author continues to take us along the journey of Karl Veth.
History teachers and students of sociology will have much to discuss, while reading this series of books.
Please read A Child to a Degree, book #1 of this series. You will not hesitate to download the next book Loyalty to a Degree & then #3 Trust to a Degree. I'm going to get book 4 right now!
I have been following this series of books written by Horst Christian. This is the 5th one I have read. Very nicely written, it holds your interest following a young man through his life during and after the war in Germany. (His friend is in some of the earlier books) Both boys have great adventures. Karl who this book follows does migrate to the US later in this book. They both remain friends for life, and do see each other from time to time in later years.
A brilliant book in a four book series that is a MUST read. if you are looking for an accurate portrayal of the life of two 14 year old boys, expected to take on the responsibilities of men during the dangerous last years of WWII in Berlin, the author does not disappoint. Karl and Harold survived by sheer determination and by their wits. Their dangerous adventures will keep you riveted and you will come to admire them. Their story is that of many German youths caught up in a regime they did not fully understand. Their primary concern was not to disappoint those in authority who gave them tasks far beyond their years just to survive and keep hold of their family taught values. It is a continuing story so start with CHILDREN TO A DEGREE -- GROWING UP UNDER THE THIRD REICH and read the following titles in subsequent order. Guaranteed you can't stop with one book!
The life and times continue for 2. 14 year old German boys, Karl and Harold, members of the Hitler youth. They have been separated from their families and their ordeals continue as the Russian take over Berlin.

This is a true account of youth life in the WWII's Berliners. I found their accounts of life in the 2nd great war, simply amazing. It truly was a different world. Children were raised in a much more disciplined manner, so what these young teens managed to endure is inconceivable to grown adults.

I have purchased and read the first 3 books in this series and will begin reading the 4th. I encourage everyone that enjoys personal historic books to read these. You can't put them down!
Some of this was laugh out loud funny as Karl maneuvers to help others in the chaos of Berlin under Russian domination. It is good to hear from someone who was there. Do read the other books in the series first. It was in this book that I really began to understand the wisdom of surrender. Hitler does not feature prominently, but in witnessing what this boy saw, his cruelty is clear, with all German citizens of just about any age pressed into service, used as cannon fodder, the SS with it's unbelievable cruelty towards other German citizens, the utter chaos of "total war" while Hitler hunkered in his bunker and took the coward's way out by committing suicide. This series tells an important story about this era that I have not seen anywhere else.
